Important Notes : Preposition

Definition-Preposition is a word which is used before a noun or pronoun to tell

its position to another noun.

1. I put my laptop on the floor.

2. He jumped into the river.

In the first sentence, ‘on’ is a preposition which tells the position of laptop to the floor.

In the second sentence, ‘into’ is a preposition which tells the position of he to the river.

Use Of Preposition

Use of across

1. one side to another

2. opposite side

3. both side

Ex. 1. There is a bridge across the river.

       2. My friend lives across the river.

       3. I put a towel across my shoulder.

Use of In and Into

1.                  In - inside to inside

2.                  Into – outside to inside (in motion)

Ex. There is milk in the jug.

       A dog fell into the well.

Use of on and upon

On – One object is already on another object in touching position.

Upon – One object comes upon another object (motion)

Ex. I put my mobile on the table.

He threw his shirt upon the floor.

Use of against

1. opposite direction

2. with the support of

3. not in favour

Ex. 1. It is difficult to swim against the current.

      2. I put a ladder against the wall.

      3. My neighbour is against me.

Use of between, among, amongst

Between – for two objects

Among – for more than two objects which starts with a consonant.

Amongst - for more than two objects which starts with a vowel.

Ex. Rahul is sitting between Sandeep and Arun.

      Distribute these mangoes among the students.

      Please, do call the Salman Khan amongst us.

Use of In and At

At – name of small places

In – name of large places.

Ex. I live in Lucknow.

      I live at Chinhat.

      I live at Chinhat in Lucknow.

Use of since and for

Since – point of time

for – period of time

Ex. I have been working in this company since 2014.

      He has been studying for three hours.

Use of beside and besides

Beside – side by side

Besides – in addition to

Ex. Yesterday, I saw smiti sitting beside Prem.

Besides the Ramayana, I bought The Bible.
